Governor Proposes Millions to Bolster Security for “Soft Targets”

(KMJ) –  Governor Gavin Newsom says he will add $15 million to his May budget revision to increase security for nonprofits across the state.  The move comes in response to a deadly shooting at a synagogue in Poway over the weekend.

Speaking in Sacramento Monday, the Governor said he will include that money in his $144 billion general fund next month.   It is designed to create a grant to help cover the cost of increased security at so-called “soft targets” like state houses of worship.

This money comes in addition to the $800,000 already included in Newsom’s proposed budget for the state Department of Justice to fund the collection of hate crime data and reporting.
