PG&E Must Comply With Wildfire Prevention Rules, Avoids $150 Billion In Regulations

 

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – PG&E must comply with wildfire prevention rules and its own plans to combat wildfires, according to a ruling by a Federal judge on Monday.

U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup is allowing the utility to avoid severe new regulations that the company said would cost it up to $150 billion.

Judge Alsup also barred PG&E from issuing dividends to shareholders, saying instead the can use the funds to reduce the risks of wildfires by trimming trees and vegetation near power lines, and intensify its inspections.

PG&E has filed for bankruptcy In a separate federal proceeding.

The utility listed $51.69 billion in debts, in the wake of liabilities and wildfire-related claims from blazes in 2015, 2017 and 2018.
