California Lawmakers Seek $100 Billion for Clean Energy

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A group of California lawmakers want the state to invest $100 billion toward efforts to drastically reduce carbon emissions and the use of fossil fuels by 2030.

The proposal Democratic lawmakers unveiled Monday would declare a climate emergency. It is a non-binding resolution. But there is a separate bill by state Assemblyman Todd Gloria to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The state’s current goal is 100 percent clean energy for electricity by 2045.

It comes as some Democrats push the Green New Deal in Congress.

The $100 billion would draw on existing state dollars to the tune of about $8.5 billion annually. Democratic Sen. Nancy Skinner says that money already exists through programs like cap-and-trade or infrastructure funds.

The resolution would ensure it’s all spent toward clean energy goals.
