Fundraiser for 13-Year-Old Clovis Middle School Student Paralyzed in Trampoline Accident

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – It was a week ago that the life of a Clovis middle school student changed forever.

On Wednesday, January 16, Makai Lloren was doing a front flip on a trampoline at Defy in Clovis.

The student from Alta Sierra Intermediate School landed on his head.

Makai suffered a broken neck at his c6 / c7 vertebrae which severed his spinal cord.

The 13-year-old is currently at Community Regional Medical Center, where he is paralyzed from the waist down.

He was told he may never walk again, but he is in good spirits, according to his family.

Makai is expected to be moved to Valley Children’s Hospital on Thursday, Jan 24, where he will spend about a month, then be able to go home.

The trampoline center, Defy Clovis issued a statement after the incident, “We look into every incident that happens at our parks with the utmost care for those involved. We are fully investigating this issue and will cooperate fully with all involved parties.”

Makai’s brother is a wrestler, and fundraisers have been taking place by high school wrestling teams in Clovis.

Before the accident, Makai was never without a bike, scooter, or skateboard, often with his his cousin McCarthy.

After hearing of the accident, McCarthy was crushed. He was told “Kai Kai” could never stand at the pier and fish, never race his motorcycle again,

His cousin wants to raise enough money to buy Kai Kai his first motorized wheelchair to get back to doing the things he loves.

McCarthy is also asking for your prayer and hope.
