FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – As many as 2,000 FEMA trailers could be headed to Northern California to provide temporary housing for fire evacuees.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency said the first few Camp Fire evacuees might find themselves placed in a FEMA trailer as early as this week.
The entire program could take several months to unfold, said the government on Wednesday.
Toney Raines, FEMA’s housing task force lead, spoke in a conference call with reporters.
“I have teams out in the field today,” said Raines. “We look at multiple sites every day.”
FEMA will search the region for sites and determine evacuees’ eligibility.
The estimate of 2,000 trailers remains preliminary, and that number could decline, said Raines, as evacuees take advantage of other FEMA programs that offer housing assistance, including cash for apartments and hotels.
