Fresno County Office of Ed. Board Votes To Keep Kepler Neighborhood School Open

FRESNO,CA (KMJ) – Board members from the Fresno County Office of Education vote to keep Kepler Neighborhood School open.

After the vote on Thursday, June 21st, the school located on Fulton Street in Downtown Fresno posted on Facebook “We are Kepler strong!!!”

Kepler had started the appeal process with the Fresno County Office of Education, in hopes of a positive renewal vote – to remain open.

Back in May, the charter was denied renewal by the Fresno Unified School District, and in 2017, the California Charter School Association said Kepler “chronically failed” to thrive and was not able to meet the academic levels required.

At that time, Executive Director Margaret Ameel said the problems were due to issues outside its control: “We moved in the new building, we had a leader who was out for maternity leave, multiple different things.”

With a three-year renewal..not the standard Charter five, Kepler thanked families and community members for being a huge part in the appeal process, posting on Facebook just after the vote that they are looking “forward to an amazing 3 years and counting with Fresno County Superintendent of Schools.”
