Fresno, CA (KMJ) – Tuesday, April 28th marked 103 years since the Armenian Genocide.
Events in Armenia and around the world were taking place to remember the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks.
Governor Jerry Brown issued a proclamation on Tuesday, declaring it “A Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide” here in California.
Thousands of people were marching through the streets of Los Angeles at the annual March for Justice.
They started at noon on Tuesday at Pan Pacific Park and ended up at the Turkish Consulate, where they were met by Turkish protesters who say the genocide didn’t happen.
Los Angeles Police were keeping both groups separate.

The Armenian Genocide Commemorative Committee of Fresno will hold a commemorative event on Tuesday, April 24, marking the 103rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide at the Armenian Genocide Monument at the Maple Mall (south of the Satellite Student Union). The event marks the anniversary of the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Turkish Empire.
Flowers will be laid around the center of the monument at 6 p.m., followed by a presentation of flags at 6:45 p.m. Dr. Khatchig Mouradian will be the keynote speaker for the evening ceremony. Mouradian is a lecturer in Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies at Columbia University in New York. and he was the Henry S. Khanzadian Kazan Visiting Professor in the fall 2016 semester. Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro will also speak.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Yektan Türkyilmaz will be the keynote speaker during a commemorative event from noon to 1 p.m. at the Monument. Türkyılmaz is the current Kazan Visiting Professor of Armenian Studies at Fresno State.
The free, public event is presented by the Armenian Students Organization and the Armenian Studies Program.
