Email Threat To Mariposa County’s School District May Have Been From Known Hacker Group

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – An email threat to Mariposa County Unified School District may have been from a known hacker group.

The Mariposa County Sheriff says the superintendent received an email Tuesday morning from an unknown person who threatened to bring a gun and bombs to the school to harm students and staff.

The Sheriff says the email was generic, similar to threats to school districts throughout California – from a known hacking group based in Switzerland called ApophisSquad.

They have been targeting schools in the UK over the past few weeks and announced they are starting to target schools in the United States.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are continuing to investigate. They say there is no reason to believe that anyone’s safety is threatened at any of the school sites in Mariposa County.

At this time in the Sheriff’s Office investigation, the threat as just one of many unfounded threats received nationwide in the recent months.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are continuing to investigate.
