Mariposa Opens Evacuation Center Due to Floods

FRESNO, CA (KMJ)  The American Red Cross of the Central Valley has opened an evacuation center for anyone affected by recent flooding, located at Mariposa Elementary School, 5044 Jones Street, Mariposa, CA 95338.

Volunteers will be on site through the night, ready to care for anyone facing evacuations or flooding. If needed, the Red Cross is prepared to transition to a full sheltering operation, providing safe lodging, hot meals, health services, and more.

“We have been monitoring this storm closely and working with our government partners to make sure our disaster teams are ready to respond when needed,” said Red Cross Executive Director Barry Falke, “We’re prepared to be here as long as there is a need.”

GET PREPARED

The Red Cross wants residents to be ready for disasters big and small, including landslides and flooding. Follow a few safety tips to prepare for, respond to, and recover from severe winter weather:

  • Create and practice an evacuation plan for your family or business.
  • Assemble and maintain an emergency preparedness kit.
  • Watch the patterns of storm water drainage on slopes near your home.
  • Listen for unusual sounds that might indicate moving debris, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together.
  • Before re-entering your home, look outside for loose powerlines, damaged gas lines, foundation cracks, or other damage.
