FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A City of Fresno FAX bus driver runs over and kills a pedestrian.
It was just after 6:00am Friday, January 19th when the 911 call came in of a someone lying in the street at Fruit and Shields.
It turned out a 62 year old Hispanic man, who had been run over by a Fresno City bus.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says video from a store caught it all on tape – the FAX bus rounding the corner, hitting the pedestrian and killing him.
It does not appear that there was any braking or sliding, what does play a factor is obviously the lighting conditions at that location,” saidFresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer, speaking of possible factors surrounding in the incident.
Chief Dyer says the FAX bus driver, 69 year-old Rudy Alderetti, was arrested and charged with felony hit and run, and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
A toxicology test was pending.
Alderetti told arresting officers thought he just had just struck a box, and broke down crying when he learned otherwise.
Chief Dyer calling it a tragedy for the victim’s family and for the driver having to live with the death the rest of his life.
