Initiative to Split California into 3 States Cleared to Gather Signatures

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Secretary of State Alex Padilla has cleared a new initiative to start collecting signatures, which would split California into three states.

If approved by voters, it would then have to be blessed by Congress.

Were that to happen, existing assets and liabilities would be divided, among the three new states.

The initiative is backed by venture capitalist Tim Draper, who was behind the failed effort to split California into 6 states.

It needs nearly 366,000 valid signatures to qualify for the 2018 ballot.

The deadline is April 23.
