Gov. Brown Signs ‘Sanctuary State’ Bill Into Law

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Governor Jerry Brown has signed Senate Bill 54 into law, which aims to substantially limit contact between state and local law enforcement, and federal immigration authorities.

The controversial measure, authored by Democratic State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, is part of an effort to protect California’s more than 2.3 million undocumented immigrants.

The federal government, under the direction of the Trump Administration, has threatened to penalize sanctuary cities and states, by withholding grant monies.

That’s now being fought in court.
