FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The Environmental Protection Agency has approved limits on the level of mercury, pertaining to fish caught in California waters.
Mining operations during the Gold Rush are responsible for millions of pounds of mercury, which is a neurtoxin, throughout state waterways.
Bass, salmon, trout, and other popular fish are key sources of food, but often contain high levels of contamination.
The EPA says the new requirements will help to combat that.
