FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Drivers hitting the road for the first time between the ages of 16 and 17, are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal collision.
That’s among the findings of a new AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study, which also says that summer is the deadliest time of year for young motorists.
Distraction plays a major role in nearly 60 percent of teen collisions, with smartphone use and conversations being the biggest issues.
AAA researchers say failure to wear a seat belt also significantly increases the risk of a fatality.
