FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Facing a deadline of just over three years, the Golden State is preparing to spend more than $220 million, to bring driver licenses and ID cards up to federal standards.
The U.S. Real ID Act was enacted in 2005, in an effort to make them more secure following 9/11.
It sets a series of stricter standards for identification, including requiring that state-issued driver licenses contain a chip or magnetic strip.
After the 2020 deadline, non-compliant cards will no longer be accepted at airport security checkpoints.
That includes the California driver licenses, which are issued to undocumented immigrants.
