Study: Spending up Significantly on Prescription Drugs

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Despite a greater acceptance of generic drugs, health insurers are spending substantially more on prescription medications.

According to a new study from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, costs have risen by more than 70 percent since 2010.

Much of that is being attributed to high cost specialty drugs, used to treat Hepatitis C, autoimmune disorders, cancer, asthma, and diabetes.

The study is being disputed by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America group, who says medicine spending is on the decline.
