Study: Pets May Lower Risk of Developing Allergies, Obesity

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Having a pet such as a dog or cat around the house, may lower the risk of developing allergies and obesity, according to a new University of Alberta study.

But, not for everyone.

Researchers say the immunity develops when babies and young children are exposed to dirt and bacteria early on — a common occurrence in households with a pet.

Their study suggests that getting a pet while mom is expecting may be a good preventative action.
