GOP Bill to Boost CA Welfare Payments is Shelved

(KMJ)     A GOP-backed bill that would boost welfare payments for many Californians has been shelved.
The legislation, authored by Assembly Republican Leader, Chad Mayes, would have increased welfare checks for recipients when they achieve educational goals – like getting a G.E.D., associates degree or job training certification.
But democrats shot it down in committee, claiming the measure could cost the Golden State as much as $20 million.
The bill, which could come up for reconsideration next month, is part of a package of anti-poverty measures from Assembly republicans.
Meantime, another republican bill that would give a tax deduction to Californians who adopt shelter pets has passed its first committee vote.
