FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Cocking fighting in Madera County is stopped by the Sheriff’s Office.
“We got a call from an anonymous caller reporting an illegal cockfight in the general area of Avenue 24 and Road 20. – Commander Bill Ward, Madera County Sheriff’s Office.
Commander Bill Ward from the Madera County Sheriff’s Office says deputy’s responded on Wednesday, March 22nd to the tip, with help from the California Highway Patrol, and their helicopter.
“We found a large group of people were in the middle of the orchard, there. As we were getting there a lot of vehicles left the area at high rates of speed. We did find fighting roosters at the scene.”

The roosters were mostly injured or dead, and were taken by Animal Control officers. Some had to be euthanized.
The subjects used arenas made of plywood to fight the roosters against one another.
“People see something like this going on – call the Sheriff’s Office, we’ll send people out.” – Commander Bill Ward, Madera County Sheriff’s Office.
Commander Ward says these people got away but if they were apprehended the penalty could be a fine up to $20,000 dollars.
Cockfighting is inhumane and is a violation California Penal Code 597b(b).
