FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Democratic Assemblywoman Susan Eggman of Stockton has introduced legislation, calling for additional taxes on the wealthiest Californians.
Imposing a 1 percent tax on household incomes at or above $1 million, would generate an estimated $2.2 billion, which Eggman is advocating be used for free public college tuition.
Between 1969 and 2015, the median household income rose by around 10 percent.
Tuition costs during the same period rose by 530 percent in the UC System, and 685 percent in the CSU System.
However, a recent report from the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California, shows that the cost of providing degrees in those systems has declined.
Still, tuition hikes are expected, and other proposals are on the table for increased state funding.
