PPIC: Cost of Furnishing Higher Education Declining

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — A new report from the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California says the expense of producing a college degree has dropped substantially, over the past few decades.

Between 1987 and 2013, institutional costs per degree declined by 17 percent, in the UC and CSU systems.

The reduction in the California State University system can be largely attributed to improving graduation rates.

The University of California system has seen a smaller drop, which is due, in part, to the higher salaries.

The PPIC report comes amid calls for increased public funding of higher education, and anticipated tuition increases.
