FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Fresno State’s CineCulture Club promotes cultural awareness through film screenings.
On Friday, March 10th, the documentary feature “I Am Not Your Negro” brings to life the manuscript of civil rights activist James Baldwin’s unfinished book “Remember This House”, examining the deaths of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Mary Husain is the CineCulture Club adviser who says it’s billed as a powerful documentary on social justice.
“So, this film looks at the past but it also fast forwards to the present time and includes clips from Ferguson and other actions today.” – Dr. Mary Husein, CineCulture Club Advisor.
From Haitian director and social activist Raoul Peck and narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, the film uses Baldwin’s own words and explorations on the racial narrative of America, with images, sounds and music from both the past and present, providing a contemporary link between the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and the present social justice movement of #BlackLivesMatter.
A trio of panelists from Fresno State is holding a post-screening discussion: Thomas-Whit Ellis, Melissa Harris, and Dr. Francine Oputa. Ellis is a professor and theatrical director in the Department of Theatre Arts; Harris is a graduate student in the Department of Communication; and Oputa is the director of the Cross Cultural and Gender Center.
“I organized the discussion because I felt it was just so important to have a discussion around this film – important opportunity for critical engagement with the community.” – Dr. Mary Husein, CineCulture Club Advisor.
Tickets cost $10 general and $8 for students and seniors with two showings at 5:30 & 8:30 tonight (March 10th) at the Tower Theater.
