FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – An 18-year veteran of the Fresno Police Department is the target of gunfire.
Fresno police have been targeting gangs in violent areas over the past week and on Sunday night, one of their officers was the target himself of gunfire.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says the veteran officer was in the neighborhood of Liberty and 5th Street, following three suspects on foot around 1:30am.
It was at the Northeast corner of Liberty and Lowe that his patrol car was shot at by a small caliber handgun.
Bullets hit the car, the windshield,,a fence,, and possibly a bullet grazing the officer’s forehead.
Chief Dyer says the officer remained calm, and is ok -now he says they’re looking for the shooter.
“We have spoken to several individuals that have provided us with good information, we are checking video and have talked to some other folks to be able to identify this person responsible. – Chief Jerry Dyer.
Chief Dyer says they are looking for tips from the public. Call Crimestoppers at 498-STOP if you have any information. The shooter, when caught could be facing attempted murder on a police officer.
