Missouri AG Appeals to SCOTUS Over Calif. Egg Restrictions

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley is making an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, over the California law that bans the sale of eggs, from chickens that are not raises in compliance with space mandates.

In 2008, voters approved a ballot initiative which requires that egg-laying hens spend most of their day with enough space to lie down, stand up, turn around, and fully extend their limbs.

In 2010, California lawmakers expanded the law, to ban the sale of eggs from any hens that were not raised in accordance with the standard.

However, Hawley argues that harms jobs in Missouri, due to increased farming costs, and higher food prices.

He adds that “The Supreme Court has been clear that states have the right to protect their citizens against out-of-state regulations,” which he says are a burden.
