Lawmaker Seeks to Increase Clean Car Incentives for Low-Income Californians

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Rebates for hybrid and electric vehicles would rise by $500 for low-income Californians, under legislation authored Democratic Assemblyman Jim Cooper.

The measure also calls for outreach to disadvantaged communities, limiting eligibility for upper-income residents, and prioritizing rebates for low-income customers.

Since 2010, more than $377 million in rebates have been issued, for more than 175,000 zero- and low-emission vehicles.

However, several studies have shown that over half of them have gone to high-earning communities.

Cooper says his bill aims to get more clean vehicles in poorer areas, where air quality tends to be worse.
