FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Republicans in the California Assembly are proposing a $5.6 billion layout, for fixes and upgrades to roads and highways.
It doesn’t call for any new taxes, although it would take all but $1 billion of that sum from the General Fund, by using an estimated $3 billion in sales tax, collected on car purchases.
Additionally, the more than $1 billion generated by truck weight fee, and the $550 million that comes from vehicle insurance fees, would be redirected to transportation.
Meanwhile, a plan put forth by the Brown Administration, and a more expensive one proposed by legislative Democrats, call for a hike in fuel taxes and higher registration fees.
The deadline for an agreement is April 6.
