FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says a buckle attached to a deputy’s thigh holster is likely why his gun discharged, shooting himself in the leg.
On November 4th, a Sheriff’s Deputy was working in the area of Church and Gearhart when his holstered weapon discharged, striking him in the lower leg. It was determined after an inspection by the Sheriff’s Office’s range master and training unit staff (certified M&P Armorers) that the gun was functioning properly. They discovered that what most likely happened is that the strap buckle got caught between the trigger and holster – causing the gun to fire one round.
The deputy received treatment at a local hospital, and was released later that day.
The Sheriff’s Office says they will address this incident in their 2017 Annual Training plan and take actions to prevent this type of accident from happening again.
