State Dept.: Majority of Syrian Refugees in U.S. are Children

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — According to the U.S. State Department, nearly 80 percent of the more than 11,000 Syrian refugees who’ve come to the United States over the past year are children.

Resettlement agencies say that’s a larger percentage than most refugee groups, partially because Syrians tend to have larger families, and many have managed to stay together despite displacement.

Many Syrian kids are now enrolling in public schools around the country, including in Chicago, Austin, New Haven, and down in suburban San Diego.

The Syrian refugee controversy has become one of the major aspects of the 2016 presidential race, amid concerns that terrorists may be interwoven in the arriving groups.
