Study: Hispanic Teens More Likely to Try Cigarettes

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Hispanic teens in the U.S. are 67 percent more likely to start smoking cigarettes than whites.

That’s among the findings of a new study by the National Institutes of Health, which also found that while African-American kids are less likely to pick up smoking, those who do are more likely to continue into adulthood.

Researchers say the attraction to e-cigarettes is also strong — an argument made by supporters of the new California laws, which treat vaping devices like tobacco.

Experts are now suggesting that anti-smoking efforts focus on portraying cigarettes as “uncool,” as opposed to outlining the dangers.
