FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Valley school officials partner with the Fresno Police to put out a PSA making its way around twitter and other sites in hopes of putting a stop to teens making threat on social media.

In September, Fresno Unified Superintendent Michael Hanson and Central Unified’s Superintendent Mark Sutton, joined by Police Chief Jerry Dyer, held a press conference (photo above) to address the copycat trend of teens posting threats on social media – and getting in trouble with adult consequences.

On Tuesday, October 11th, Superintendent Hanson posted a PSA on his twitter called “Be Smart When You Post.”

The schools and police hope the PSA gets shared and stops kids from compromising their future.

The following statement was sent out by Fresno Unified:

Fresno Unified Statement Regarding Social Media PSA: In the past few weeks Fresno Unified, along with many other school district across the nation, have been working with local law enforcement to address social media threats. Locally, the Fresno Police Department investigated the posts that were brought to their attention, determined the threats to not be credible, and made several arrests in connection with making the social media posts.

We are encouraging parents and guardians to take these incidents as an opportunity to speak with their children about the consequences and responsibilities of using social media. Superintendent Michael Hanson, Central Unified Superintendent Mark Sutton, and Fresno Police Department Chief Dyer partnered to create this public service announcement to highly encourage all adults and students to be smart when they post. Making threatening statements via social media is considered a criminal offense.
