FUSD Launches Initiative to Expand Students’ Access to Higher Education

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Last year, only half of college eligible Fresno Unified students applied to schools corresponding to their academic profiles, meaning they limited their choices.

As a result, Superintendent Michael Hanson says all high school seniors will now be getting individualized eligibility packets.

“They’ve been living on stories of the past around how college happens, and we wanted to be much more explicit with people in their senior year, given the hard work they’ve put in,” Hanson told KMJ News.

The district is partnering with several leaders in post-secondary education, including Fresno State President Dr. Joseph Castro.

Castro says, “It’s extraordinarily important that we get information out to every family, and especially the ones who haven’t been touched by higher education, because their parents don’t really know how to navigate that system. These packets of information provide that extra sort of resource that students can look at and say, ‘This is what I want to do.’ It makes the decision a lot clearer.”

The initiative targets Fresno high school seniors. However, Hanson says there are plans to begin preparing students for higher education at even younger ages, and to boost the number online resources.
