Earthquake Early Warning System Gets a Boost

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The Golden State’s earthquake early warning system is getting a boost, following Gov. Jerry Brown’s signing of new legislation.

It requires California to compile a business plan for the estimated $28 million project by 2018.

The system will use sensors which can detect shaking seconds or minutes before an earthquake, and issue alerts on smart phones, radios, and other devices.

Similar systems are used in Mexico, Turkey, and Japan.
