FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Under a bill signed into law by the Gov. Jerry Brown, many Californians convicted of driving under the influence will be required to install breathalyzers of their cars, in order to get back their driver license.
The “ignition interlock devices” prevent a vehicle from starting, if the driver’s blood alcohol content is above the legal limit.
A pilot program in a handful of California counties is believed to have prevented more than 1 million attempts to drink and drive, since 2010.
The new law takes effect in 2019, but will sunset in 2026.
