Restrictions on Distracted Driving to Expand

(KMJ/CBS SF) – Checking your GPS while driving will soon be illegal (unless you have your phone mounted).  Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation that expands restrictions on cell phone use while driving.

AB 1785 prohibits drivers from checking maps, adjusting playlists, taking photos or live streaming on their phones while driving – unless a hands free device is used.  The law restricts drivers from physically holding their phone for any reason.  The new law does allow for drivers to swipe on their devices – if their phone is attached to a dashboard or windshield mount.

These new restrictions add on to the existing bans on calling and texting while behind the wheel.

The law goes into effect January 1, 2017. Violators will be subject to a $20 fine for the first offense, with fines going up for additional offenses.
