There will be no tax breaks for tampons and diapers in the Golden State. California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed bills on Tuesday that would have lifted taxes on tampons, sanitary napkins and diapers – among other items. The legislation was put forth because the items are necessary for women and children – not luxury items.
In a veto message, Governor Brown said that the bills would reduce revenue by about $300 million through 2017-2018.
Brown says the tax breaks are the same as new spending – which both cost general fund money. The Governor vetoed 7 bills in total that would have given tax breaks or expanded existing tax breaks.
