FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The California Senate has approved a bill which would require that county jail inmates be notified, before they’re interviewed by federal immigration officials.
Supporters argued that federal policies are harming immigrant communities, and tearing apart families.
If the the bill’s approved, local law enforcement agencies would have to promptly notified inmates and their lawyers, if ICE is informed of their release date.
In addition, jail staff would be mandated to tell immigrants that the interviews with ICE are voluntary.
