Calif. Cap-and-Trade Extension Bill Clears Assembly

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Following heated debates at the California Capitol, a measure to extend the cap-and-trade program has managed to clear the Assembly.

The bill calls for a 40 percent reduction in emissions, compared to 1990 levels, by 2030.

However opponents argue that the targets harm California businesses, and that too much authority is being given to the Air Resources Board.

Another challenge for the program: only 34 percent of the available carbon-emissions credits were sold at the state’s latest auction.

The bill returns to the Senate for final approval.
