August 23rd Is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day

BLACK WOMEN

FRESNO (KMJ) – Today, August 23rd is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day.

Equal Pay Day signifies how far into the year women must work to earn as much as men – and it falls in April, but for an African-American women, it’s on Black Women’s Equal Pay Day that they finally catch up.

The National Women’s Law Center finds that instead of earning the national average of 79 cents on the dollar, African-American women earn 60 cents for every dollar white men earn – working a full 20 months to make the same money as white men make in twelve.

Researchers say African-American women are more likely to have jobs in lower-paying fields like education, office administration, sales and service, and often need to take time off as caregivers and for child care -but not all of the gap can be explained by these factors.
