FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The first case of the West Nile Virus in Fresno in 2016 has been confirmed. The Fresno County Department of Public Health confirmed its first case of the virus this year was diagnosed in a man, and it is attacking his nervous system. The man contracted the virus through a mosquito bite.
Health Educator Leticia Berber warns that even though Fresno is not in the woods, wearing mosquito repellant every day is important. She says mosquitos also attack a lot in the evening, so be extra careful when the sun is setting. If you don’t have repellent, then wearing clothing that covers your body.
Fresno had 6 cases of the virus last year, but no fatalities. There were 53 West Nile Virus deaths in California in 2015.
