Study: ‘Drunkorexia’ More Common in Colleges Than Previously Estimated

drunkFRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The practice of skipping meals or exercising heavily before drinking alcohol, known as “drunkorexia,” isn’t exactly new among college students.

But, according to the latest figures released at the Research Society on Alcoholism, “drunkorexia” may be far more common than previously estimated.

80 percent of participants in this study say they have recently engaged in the practice, by either reducing their caloric intake, or doing an extensive workout.

Experts say having food in your stomach reduces peak blood alcohol levels by about a third; by flipping that, your peak level is significantly higher.

That increases the risk of blackouts, injuries, and poor judgement — consequences significantly worse than those of not saving calories.
