FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — California’s public colleges and universities are failing to produce enough STEM majors.
STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math.
According to the nonprofit Campaign for College Opportunity, the Golden State ranks 48th in the nation for bachelor’s degree completion in health, 38th in computer science, and 37th when it comes to engineering.
A mere 33 percent of CSU students who begin with a STEM major managed to graduate with a STEM degree.
The UC system, even though it’s only half the size of CSU system, produces nearly the same number of stem graduates.
The campaign says the degree-completion issue is harming the state’s workforce, and is calling on policymakers and educators to keep students on a straight path.
