FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Summer is the season for outdoor grilling, and a wire brush is a necessity for keeping the grill clean.
The University of Missouri School of Medicine is warning about the dangers of loose bristles.
Between 2002 and 2014, there were nearly 1,700 injuries stemming from loose bristles that ended up in grilled food.
Some of the injuries in the mouth, tonsils, and throat required surgery.
Researchers say the potential dangers of worn wire brushes are rarely considered, but they recommend frequent inspections to avoid serious injuries.
