Fresno State’s President Honored With Mexico’s Otlhi Award

FRESNO (KMJ) – Fresno State’s first Latino president honored Tuesday, May 3, 2016 by the country of Mexico.

The Government of Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has named him this year’s Otlhi Award Winner.

“Its a tremendous honor – my grandfather was born in Mexico so to be honored for my work here in the Central Valley is deeply meaningful.” -Joseph Castro, Fresno State President.

Edgar Olivera, who conducts public relations for the Mexican Consulate says President Joseph Castro promotes higher education regardless of immigration and economic status, and the award recognizes his drive to give talent an opportunity.

“With all the projects that he has launched such as the Discovery Tablet program – such as the Dream Center, the Student Cupboard, have really allowed students to be successful in college. -Edgar Olivera, Mexican Consulate.

“Well, Fresno State serves all of our students here in the Valley but we have particularly served those from under-represented backgrounds and I think that’s part of our overall philosophy that talent is everywhere.” – Fresno State President Joseph Castro.

This award is the highest honor for leaders, internationally who make an impact on the Mexican community abroad.
