FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Prince Rogers Nelson was born in 1958 in Minneapolis.

A musician and a singer with an impressive vocal range, he landed recording contracts with major labels, after making a demo tape in 1976.

Prince released several chart toppers during his career, which include 5 no. 1 hits: When Doves Cry and Let’s Go Crazy in 1984, Kiss in 1986, Batdance in 1989, and Cream in 1991.

He had a number of stage names, including The Artist Formerly Known as Prince.

The 57-year-old icon passed away at his mansion in Minnesota Thursday morning.

He had been battling the flu.
