FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Thousands of California voters have registered with the American Independent Party, after mistaking the party for the “no party preference” option.

That’s according an LA Times investigation, which reveals that a large majority of those registered with the American Independent Party were unaware of its far right views.

It was founded in 1967 by Alabama Governor George C. Wallace.

The American Independent Party opposes same-sex marriage, and supports building a wall at the border.

Fresno County Clerk Brandi Orth says, “On the California Secretary of State’s website, there is a section there that has all of the political party’s statements of purpose. That might be a good place for voters kind of to read about the party that they’ve signed up with.”

California Republicans are holding a closed primary, meaning only registered Republicans are allowed to participate. In the Democratic primary, only registered Democrats and “no party preference” voters may take part.

Several California celebrities with more progressive leanings, including Demi Moore, Sugar Ray Leonard, Emma Stone, and Kaley Cuoco, say they were confused by the word “independent” in the party’s name, and plan to change their affiliation.
