Valley Teens Developing Energy Saving Ideas To Win Money

JUNIOR-ACHIEVEMENT

CLOVIS (KMJ) — Teams of High School students have been developing ideas on how to help reduce energy use, as part of a competition set up by ‘Junior Achievement’.

The program invited teenagers from Clovis, Fresno, Kingsburg, and Fowler schools, to pose them the question ‘how do you create a business or program that will save your household money?’ It’s being sponsored by PG&E.

“This is what’s so cool about today”, says program coordinator Cathy Davis. “they are actually going to take these ideas back to PG&E and say ‘here’s people who live in homes and here’s some of the thoughts that they’ve had'”.

“[The students] can’t say to us ‘well we’re going to borrow $5 million’…well no you’re not. So it has to be something that is actually achievable. Maybe not today, but for them in the near future”.

And as well as the potential environmental benefit, it also has a big impact on the young entrepreneurs in the training too.

“They’re going to learn how to plan. In basically five hours they’re creating a business. So how do you do that?

“You brainstorm, and then you refine, and then you put your presentation together, do the presenting”.

The competitors have an extra incentive too: each member of the team considered to have the best idea wins around $100 each.
