Chase Ends In Fresno’s Fifth Officer Involved Shooting

OIS SAMBOON

(KMJ) – Fresno Police continue to investigate the City’s 5th Officer Involved Shooting of 2016.

Around 12:30 Sunday morning, two Fresno Police Officers were patrolling the area of Wishon and Vassar when they tried to stop a wrong-way vehicle. But the driver, identified as 25-year old Sawon Samboon, did not stop and led the officers on a brief pursuit.

That chase ended at Clinton and Wilson where the vehicle crashed.  Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyers says Samboon got out of his vehicle and ran from officers, armed with a handgun. Both officers pursued on foot and gave commands for the suspect to stop. At one point both officers fired several rounds at the suspect as he ran into a neighborhood while armed with the handgun.

The suspect who was struck several times dropped the handgun and fell to the ground.  Officers rendered first aid prior to the suspect being transported to the hospital. The suspect is in stable condition and received treatment at Community Regional Medical Center.

Fresno Police say Samboon has several prior arrests.  Last time he was booked into Fresno County Jail he claimed to be an associate of a Southeast Asian gang.

Both officers who were involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the initial outcome of the investigation.

Both officers were equipped with body worn cameras which were activated and captured the incident.
