FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Thumb drives are small, efficient, and convenient; and because of that, you might lose track of yours.
But, with the finds of a new University of Illinois study, you’ll probably want to be more cautious.
As part of an experiment, researchers dropped nearly 300 thumb drives on campus.
45 percent of them were plugged in and look through by those who discovered them.
The research team loaded the drives with what appeared to be documents, photos, and exam notes.
However, they were actually HTML documents, which upon being opened, notified the study’s authors.
The study also serves as a reminder to avoid plugging in an unknown thumb drive, as they could transmit malware.
