FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The University of California is hurting local students, by making excessive out-of-state admissions.

That’s according to highly-critical audit, which recommends stricter entrance requirements, a cap on enrollment, and increased recruitment of californians.

It was requested by the California Legislature, amid concerns about the tripling of nonresident students since 2007.

Currently, thousands of qualified students who can’t get in to their UC campus of choice are offered a spot at UC Merced, regardless of whether or not they applied there.

The University of California has been plagued by financial troubles in recent years, and compensation for top executives has come under scrutiny.
