FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — California approved mandatory vaccines for public school children last year, offering exemptions only for those with a medical condition.

The legislation drew much controversy, with opponents arguing that it was unconstitutional.

Now, a measure has been introduced that would protect doctors who issue an exemption, from liability and discipline.

Democratic Assemblyman Mike Gatto, the bill’s author, says given the heated debate over the mandate, it’s vital that physicians be protected.

It’ll get its first hearing later this spring.
